Working From a Hotel Without Losing the Point of Being Away

A desk, a connection that holds, and a door that closes. What a room needs for real work, and why the boundary between working and resting is worth defending.

A Table Is Not a Desk

Plenty of rooms advertise a workspace and provide a console table at coffee height with a single socket behind the television. If you are working for more than an hour, you need a surface at seventy-five centimetres, a chair with a back, and power within reach of your hands. Everything else is decoration.

The Connection Question

Ask what the wired speed is, not whether there is Wi-Fi. Every hotel has Wi-Fi; not every hotel has a connection that survives forty rooms streaming at nine in the evening. Ours is a symmetric business line with a separate guest network, and every room has an ethernet point for anyone who has learned not to trust wireless before a presentation.

Calls Need Acoustics, Not Just Quiet

A quiet room can still sound terrible on a call if it is all hard surfaces. Curtains, a rug, and an upholstered headboard absorb enough reflection to make you intelligible without a headset. If you take calls for a living, request a room with soft furnishing on at least two walls. We know which ones they are.

Separate the Room From the Office

The single most useful thing you can do on a working trip is stop working somewhere other than where you sleep. Our library lounge exists for this: a room with power, low light, and an unspoken rule about phone calls. Move there for the last hour and the bedroom stays a bedroom.

Timing the Day Around the Building

Housekeeping runs between ten and two. If you have a morning of calls, hang the notice and we will come later; if you would rather have the room done early, tell the desk the night before. Guests often work around housekeeping when housekeeping would happily work around them.

Stay Long Enough to Stop

The trips that go badly are the ones scheduled so tightly that the hotel is only ever somewhere to change clothes. Adding a single night at either end costs less than the flight change you will otherwise make, and it is the difference between travelling for work and simply working somewhere else.
